Main Idea hay còn gọi là Topic Sentence chính là LUẬN ĐIỂM chính mà Bạn đưa ra để bảo vệ quan điểm của mình. Nó nói lên ý chính của cả đoạn văn, vì vậy Bạn cần viết câu Main Idea thật rõ ràng, súc tích để người đọc có thể nắm được ý chính của toàn bộ đoạn văn Bạn viết về vấn đề gì.

Câu main idea các em phải hiểu là một câu mà nó sẽ chứa nội dung chính của cả đoạn Paragraph Tức là người ta chỉ cần đọc câu Main idea là sẽ hiểu rõ các em sẽ viết cái gì trong đoạn Paragraph đó.
Ví dụ: Quan điểm của Bạn là Ăn rau xanh nhiều sẽ tốt cho sức khỏe thì:
Lợi ích 1: Ăn rau xanh tốt cho việc làm đẹp daLợi ích 2: Ăn rau xanh tốt cho vóc dáng
+++ Bổ sung cho Luận điểm sẽ là những luận cứ chi tiết hơn và ví dụ cụ thể , được gọi là Supporting ideas và Example
Viết câu Main idea nên đơn giản, rõ ràng và đặt ở đầu mỗi đoạn văn để nêu lên ý chính của đoạn, không nên đặt ở giữa và cuối đoạnViệc đặt ở đầu đoạn, giúp cho giám khảo chấm bài dễ theo dõi và chấm điểm cho Bạn hơn.Thông qua câu Main Idea, giám khảo sẽ nắm được ý chính của từng đoạn văn, cấu trúc mà Bạn đang viết có trả lời đúng câu hỏi của đề bài hay không
Ví dụ:
In my opinion, the overuse of private vehicles is the main cause of traffic congestion.In my opinion, junk food is the main cause of childhood obesity.
Ở trên là các ví dụ về main idea, sau các câu main idea này bạn sẽ giải thích quan điểm trên bằng cách giải thích, đưa ra hậu quả, và các ví dụ cụ thể trong phần còn lại của đoạn văn. Như vậy, đoạn văn sẽ bao gồm một Main Idea và các Supporting Sentences được dùng để giải thích, chứng minh, phân tích nội dung ở câu chủ đề.
Despite these reasons, there is a strong argument in favour of also promoting staff because of their performance. This can be seen by how some multi-nationals use annual performance and development reviews when deciding on promotion. Under this system, a supervisor can set targets for an employee and if those targets are met, then the employee can be promoted, even if they are relatively junior. The benefit of this approach to promotion is that it encourages staff to work harder and rewards merit and not just long service.

On the one hand, it is true that many hobbies are simply passing trends. Children and teenagers, in particular, are attracted to whatever activity is currently popular among their peers. My 10-year-old niece, for example, seems to have a new interest every month, as she joins in with the latest craze that sweeps through her primary school. Over the last year or so, she has been obsessed with Rubik’s cubes, fidget spinners, squidgies and slime. In a similar way, there have been several different fitness trends for adults over recent years, from jogging to yoga to circuit training, and I doubt whether the majority of participants continued to enjoy those activities in the long term.

On the other hand, many people spend their free time doing popular activities that are far from trendy. One good example would be the game chess. Children and adults who enjoy playing chess are certainly not following a new fashion or wasting their time on something that they do not truly like. On the contrary, they are passionate about a game that has existed for hundreds of years, and they find it inherently fascinating and absorbing. I would say the same about many other hobbies, from reading to swimming.

On the other hand, I share the concerns of people who believe that artificial intelligence may harm us if we are not careful. In the short term, it is likely that we will see a rise in unemployment as workers in various industries are replaced by machines or software programs. For example, self-driving vehicles are expected to cause redundancies in driving jobs, such as lorry drivers, taxi drivers and bus drivers. In the medium term, if intelligent technologies gradually take jobs away from humans, we may find that people become deskilled and lose their sense of purpose in life. A longer term fear is that computers become so intelligent that they begin to make decisions without human oversight and without regard for our well-being.

Advertisements can certainly tempt people to buy products that they might not otherwise want. A good example could be the mobile phone. Every year people can be seen queuing to buy the latest models, even when they already have a perfectly good phone that does not need replacing. Perhaps it is the influence of marketing that leads us to make these kinds of decisions; we want to stay up to date with the latest fashions or own the newest high-status device. The high sales of the iPhone seem to support this idea.
Câu main idea sẽ là Advertisements can certainly tempt people to buy products that they might not otherwise want. khi các em đọc vào các em sẽ thấy rõ là đoạn này thầy sẽ viết về nội dung quảng cáo thu hút cám dỗ người ta mua hàng, sau đó đưa dẫn chứng để chứng minh
On the other hand, I believe that most people do not buy products because of the advertising alone. There are other good reasons why we make these choices, and there must be some kind of need before a person makes a purchase. New versions of products almost always have improved features that buyers may want. A new car, for example, may have greatly improved safety features, or it may be more economical to run, or it may pollute less. A new phone may allow the user to communicate more quickly or effectively, thus enhancing their quality of life.

Câu main idea sẽ là On the other hand, I believe that most people do not buy products because of the advertising alone. đọc câu main idea các em sẽ thấy rằng đoạn này thầy sẽ quay quanh viết về không phải tất cả mọi người mua hàng hóa vì advertising, rồi đưa dẫn chứng và ví dụ ra chứng minh!
2. Nếu chúng ta có nhiều hơn 2 quan điểm hoặc ý tưởng thì Bạn nên viết câu Main Idea theo kiểu gián tiếp giới thiệu các ý sau đó
Ví dụ:
There are two main cause/several causes of childhood obesity.There are two main causes (or ‘several causes’) of traffic congestion.

2 câu trên là 2 ví dụ của câu main idea Sau đó, Bạn sẽ liệt kê các luận cứ để chứng minh cho luận điểm bằng các từ như firstly, secondly, finally, besides, in addition,… Lưu ý là kể cả trong Firstly, Secondly cũng nên có supporting idea hoặc example (linh động tuỳ trường hợp)
!!! Lưu ý:
Nếu Bạn viết câu Main Idea giới thiệu sẽ có 2 ý trong đoạn văn, thì Bạn nên trình bày đủ 2 ý, vì nếu chỉ viết một ý thì sẽ mất điểm ở tiêu chí tính nhất quán trong đoạn văn.
Countries with a large proportion of young adults may experience various problems. Firstly, if considerable numbers of people leave school or university at the same time, there will be intense competition for jobs. This oversupply of labour could cause an increase in unemployment. Secondly, an abundance of working-age adults may result in higher rates of poverty and falling living standards, as governments or local councils are unable to meet the demand for the provision of housing and public services. Finally, there is a risk that rates of crime and antisocial behaviour may rise if the needs of a young population are not met.

On the one hand, the increasing intelligence of technology should bring some obvious benefits. Machines are clearly able to do many jobs better than humans can, especially in areas that require high levels of accuracy or calculations using large amounts of data. For example, robots are being developed that can carry out surgical procedures with greater precision than a human doctor, and we already have cars that use sensors and cameras to drive themselves. Such technologies can improve safety by reducing the likelihood of human errors. It is easy to imagine how these developments, and many others, will steadily improve our quality of life.

Main idea: There are several reasons why people might argue that homework is an unnecessary burden on children.
Supporting Idea 1: Firstly, some individuals believe time off school should be spent on outdoor activities to help students develop their soft skills.
Supporting Idea 2: Secondly, many parents would agree that studying too much can affect students’ health and increases their level of stress.
b) View 2: Homework plays an important role
Topic Sentence: In spite of the above arguments, I support the view that homework has an important role to play in the schooling of children.
Supporting Idea : The main benefit of homework is that it encourages independent learning and fosters learners’ autonomy.
